sorting in natbib

hi, I'm a newbie.
I guess the natbib package is the best for my purposes, but I'd like  
to sort and compress my references, i.e. (1-4) instead of (1,2,3,4)
How can I do that?
Moreover, how can I edi the entire preamble?
