Hi, 1st problem: the use of et al. this IS DUE TO APA! So how could it be different? In any case, as for I know, there is no style which manages a different behaviour, that is the use of et al. only for the second reference on. Anyway, try using the custom-bib package and create a personal style that suits you. This is not difficult: all instructions appear on the screen and you have just to select your preference among some optional choices. You could also use 3 other styles similar to APA: apacite, apalike, newapa The advantage is that in these three cases you don't need to use the APA article class, so you can use any class and then numbered sections, or what you prefer.
2nd problem: there must be some problem with the original bibliographic file because this problem is not a standard behaviour with APA. Open the .bib file containing your references using a simple text editor and check if there is somethibg which is not correct. Hope to be of help.
