After some more experiences I discovered that Lyx is capable of handling utf8, 
but not TeX. The problem arose when importing TeX documents with some utf8 
characters. Importing utf8 in Lyx is not a problem if the document encoding 
is set to utf8 or the inputenc package is used. When exporting from Lyx to 
TeX, the document is correctly converted to iso-8859-15 (probably).
