AFAIK \underbar won't work with a Greek letter. I assume you're using a
workaround for this if it comes out correctly in the PDF. When you say
LyX won't render it, do you mean with instant preview on or with instant
preview off? If the latter, maybe it's a problem with your installed
display fonts. With IP off, LyX renders it just fine for me; with IP
on, it renders if I include the workaround I know (redefining \underbar
to \uline from the ulem package).
What OS, what version of LyX etc.? IP on or off?
