LyX format is a text format. Somehow similarly to LaTeX. It's
advantage is that it can be more less easily recovered, when something
go wrong. There was a version of LyX 1.5 where compression destroyed
files. That is why it is not enabled by default and left for user to
consciously enable it, when needed.
