As reported on this list, some users had problems to open older LyX files with LyX 1.6.x. The
problem was a corrupted file of the scripting language Python that is used by LyX for file conversions.
When you are affected by this problem, replace the file "unicodedata.pyd" that you find in LyX's
installation folder under ~\bin\DLLs with this one:

For new LyX installations I fixed this in the new alternative installer version
4.17:

In this version I upgraded also from Python 2.6.0 to 2.6.1 to fix some other
potential problems.
