I am trying to write a family history with LyX. It won't be like a
scientific or mathematical treatise, or like a novel. It will be a
narrative with photos and other graphics, each with a caption.

I have read what the Wiki says about the procedure for inserting floats, and
a couple of posts from others. I am still totally confused.

I understand that I have "Caption" as an environment and "Figure Float" from
the pull-down menu.  There is something to the effect: "Write your caption;
click at the beginning of it, and insert your figure float there." If I
type a caption, then select it and set it to be a Caption Environment, or
if I change the Environment to Caption, and type, there are no obvious cues
in or around the caption text. When I insert the figure, the caption is
outside the figure float, and the line of text is level with the bottom
border, half to the left and half to the right.

If I create the Figure Float first, the environment selection is grayed out.
I cannot add a caption within the float.

Please, briefly, as a list of points, what are the steps? Or is the job
just too much for LyX? At least one other struggling author came to that
conclusion. I could probably do better with HTML, and have more control
over layout, without sacrificing the WYSIWYM principle.

Doug.
