How would I write CO_2 in such a way that it is not emphasized

in LaTeX:
 the catalytic subunit of the key enzyme of the light dependent 
$CO_{2}$-fixation

I am sure there is a way in LyX to do that but I can't find it (checked 
Embedded Objects)
