I assume the limitation is the width of a short integer in the compiler. Most 32-bit programs will run on a 64-bit computer (at least they will on the laptop I'm typing this on, which is running 64-bit Linux) but that doesn't mean they have 64-bit integers. I compiled LaTeX from source, so larger sizes might work for me, but I don't plan to have pages larger than 6m, so it really doesn't matter.
