You can go Word-->OpenOffice-->LaTeX. Indeed, I keep thinking that I should find the time to write a script that would do this: It surely must be possible to automate the process. Back the other way, htlatex will export a "Word (HTML)" format, which I guess is some variety of HTML that Word understands. And isn't Word supposed now to import ODT? There's at least a plugin for that.

The general tenor of the replies to the original message seems to confirm my
experience: it is possible to convert to/from word but impossible (i.e. too
time-consuming) to work in a shared word/lyx environment. Indeed I use
openoffice in any interaction with my students (who would only use word) and
find it perfectly acceptable. On the other hand, I can enjoy the productivity
of LyX/Latex for my own projects even when the final link of the publishing
chain is stuck on word.

I'm puzzled about why working with students requires using OpenOffice. I tell my students to send me things as PDF, and if I want to comment directly on the paper, electronically, I can do that in okular (and Windows folks can do it in foxit).
