For better visual feedback in LyX, you can put the >> \def\independenT#1#2{\mathrel{\rlap{$#1#2$}\mkern2mu{#1#2}}} and transform \newcommand{\independent}{\protect\mathpalette{\protect\independenT}{\perp}} into a math-macro (copy the command in the document, mark it and convert with Ctrl-M). If you copy the \perpl into the LyX box of the math-macro, it looks reasonably well in LyX. Günter
