itselft. Very probably because it is "AMS(book,french)"...
How can I check where the layout file is? I may then be able to answer
with more details.
I don't know debian, but presumably you can use some dpkg type command
to list whatever is in this package, and it will tell you where that
file lives. Probably somewhere like /usr/share/lyx/layout/.
This may be a pre-1.6 layout that was never properly adapted to the new
1.6 format.
