Yeah, that's better than my way for several reasons: 1) It's more accurate 2) Your scripts won't have to change every time you use a new LyX version The only downside is it will take longer to give a result. No big deal, you can put it in the background and cat it onto the end of a log giving the date, time, and wordcount, and you can continue working while the words are being counted.
