I'm writing an essay and want to try writing it in lyx. The level I am at
now is that I've managed to write some simple mathematical equations, but
not much more.

I recommend that you work through the tutorial first. It appears that you
know nothing about LaTeX, to which LyX is essentially a GUI front end.

I'm interested in your opinions on whether the following is a good and
feasible way to write my document. What I want to achieve is:
1. I want to separate content from layout "completely".

  That's exactly what LaTeX does.

2. I want to complete the entire content before I work on the design and
even before I find out about the details of some latex functions. (When
all content is completed, I will know exactly what layout the different
sections should have).

Try one of the existing layouts first. They're designed by experts and
will do very well for most everyone's needs.

I will show what I mean using one simple and one less simple example.

Simple example:
When writing an integral, I want to use a function/macro/similar that I
define on my own, say \Cust_int, which doesn't deal with layout at all.

Read the math sections of the manuals. Knuth wrote TeX primarily because
nothing else formatted mathematical equations with sufficient elegance. Look
on the math panel, too, for all symbols.

Your opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Run the tutorial and read the users guide and advanced manuals.
