Yes, it can be done, and there is more than one way to do so. You can:

1. usestandard bibtex with the mla style. I no longer use this method, as
it was not very reliable

2. use biblatex (a replacement for bibtex that is still in beta version but
widely used) with the biblatex-mla style availaible here:
http://konx.net/biblatex-mla/
(see the disclaimer about the latest version of the MLA handbook not
being supported, though)

3. just use biblatex and tweak one of the standard styles or the excellent
biblatex-dw style by Dominik Weisshoven (a style explicitly designed for the
humanities, but with a decidedly European flavor):
http://biblatex.dominik-wassenhoven.de/biblatex-dw.shtml?en

I currently use method 3, but I have heard good reports about method 2.
Method 1 is, in my opinion, obsolete.

Notice that, in the vast majority of cases, publishers requesting
manuscripts formatted with MLA style will also request the manuscript in
microsoft word format. This means that the lyx/latex file will have to be
converted into Word format. It can be done, but it is not completely
painless. On the plus side, once the manuscript is converted, you can fix
any minor bibliographic problem by hand.

Stefano
