Thank you Jürgen, Pavel for the Tips!

In fact I was aware of the requirement of putting the biblography as
absolute path into the document -- somehow this was lost when I created
the test-document
from scratch and "played" around with it (some try and error stuff).

Pavel seems to be right - the bibliography path has to be correct on  2
places in the document.

Now I re-checked the original document - compared the preamble and
document options, double checked the bibliography file paths and - magic
- 

NOW IT WORKS !!!
