This is non-responsive to your exact question but may (or may not) be something you appreciate... I wouldn't be caught dead taking notes with any software other than VimOutliner. VimOutliner's top design priority was authoring speed, and it's incredibly fast while still making it easy to take structured notes, shift things around, reorganize things, etc. VimOutliner has a body text feature so you can write long quotes and they'll word wrap and not become part of the hierarchy. When you get home, you'll clean up your VimOutliner based notes and then run a script to put them into LyX or LaTeX form, with a layout using no indents but separation and different fonts and colors. Or you can just leave them in VimOutliner form. Once again, when it comes to realtime notetaking, VimOutliner is much faster than LyX. LyX's long suit is authoring documents with lots of body text, not realtime notetaking where most of what you write is part of the hierarchy.
