Not quite. Traditionally, the font size includes some vertical whitespace (it derives from the height of the metal body in metal typesetting, not from the height of the characters; in digital typesetting, such extra whitespace is also often included in the metrics). So two 12pt fonts might well differ in character height. Jürgen
