The way I always handle this type of thing is I use the brand new version for
new construction, but don't port my old-version-written docs to the new
version til the new version is production quality and has gotten some bug
shakeouts.

If I want to test the new version on an old document, I test it on a *copy* of
the old document.

A couple versions I didn't handle this way because I needed the new versions
features right away. This includes the version that brought us character
styles, which I'd been dying for for years, and the version that brought us
outline mode, which is darned useful.
