I've had this problem.
You can either:
- add "\frenchbsetup{StandardItemLabels=true}" to your preamble, which
disables the french localization of bullets
- Use the other mecanisms for customizing bullets as described in section
3 of Babel's frenchb localization manual at
http://daniel.flipo.free.fr/frenchb/frenchb2-doc.pdf
