the manual refers to using the package marginnote.  That may be a better option
than what follows.

I have done some of what you are trying to do with the
following additions to my preamble.

\let\oldmarginpar\marginpar
\renewcommand\marginpar[1]
{\-\oldmarginpar[\raggedleft\sffamily\scriptsize #1]%
{\raggedright\sffamily\scriptsize #1}}

I change to sans serif to distinguish from main text, that is a personal thing.
Occasionally I have used blue text too.
I'm sure there is a footnote style.
