Maybe this is because it ran out of memory. Compiling lyx with debug
symbols is very memory hungry (at least in terms of somewhat older
computers). I had several occasions where I had to hard-reset the
machine due to thrashing when compiling LyX before I bought my current
machine.

Fortunately, I never experienced such a problem (only slow startup due
to file system checks). 

I don't know enough about the computer (dual boot, notebook, hard-disk or
flash (SSD) disk), ... to be able to help.

Could you try to boot a live linux (Knoppix or the install discs or
something like that) for diagnosis?
