Try placing the table inside a minipage (box) within the float.  This will make

scheme (a,b,c ... if using the standard classes) and not screw up your document

Ah, perfect. That turns it into the 'table note' that I'm used to seeing, and could never coerce OpenOffice or Word into doing correctly (at least not without standing on my head).

I could whine and say that should happen automagically, but I won't, because this is very fine.
