Hi Peter, are you using Lyx 1.6.8? If so, go to Tools>>Preferences, and select Output>Latex on the left side. You'll see many options in the right part of the panel. In the field "BibTeX command" write 'biber' or (if you are using Unicode bib files) 'biber -u' That will start biber instead of bibtex. > But even if I change the option to "backend=biber" there is no predefined > biber menu entry in LyX to choose from. > I think you are referring to Lyx 2, here. I am not sure which version you are using. In the latest SVN (downlaoded on 12/27) it is one of the options from the pop up list, alongside bibtex and bibtex8.
