Hi,
there's a compromise solution: "screen-recenter" - it is not an automatic 
action but it can be bound to a shortcut key, and it scrolls the document so 
you can type in the center of the screen.
Depending on your keyboard bindings, there may already be a shortcut for it. 
You can find it by going to Prefs > Editing > Shortcuts and searching for 
screen-recenter. If it doesn't exist, you can create one with a key combination 
that is convenient to you. I use Control-L following emacs conventions, and use 
it frequently. It's a matter of taste, but I think it's nice to have the choice 
whether to recenter or not.
