Well, since I've run only linux since 1977, and haven't used gnuplot since 1998, all I can tell you is that it happened with this one plot on a linux box. :-) Personally, I prefer PSTricks, but each day's rainfall total is a discrete amount unrelated to prior and succeeding days. This means that any sort of line plot (including time series) is inappropriate. Such bar plots have a place in scientific work as well as in business (where thay are a mainstay of spreadsheet graphics). Rich
