though I am relatively new to Lyx but I think it's easy to do references on 
this awesome app.
1.maintain a file with Bibtex references. 
(you can just copy/paste the Bibtex in the website where you get the paper/book)
2.name the file and save it with .bib extension 
3. in Lyx, go insert->List/TOC->Bibtex Bibliography
A window will appear, click Add then Browse
4. Locate your .bib file then click add then ok 

now you are ready to cite all the references in your file by choosing 
insert->citation
