You mean filename.doc.lyx? It opens in the converter mode, but no encoding will fit (not even the Unicode ones). However, Lyx 2.0 will open it without problems, so it means the encoding should be correct.

When I tell the program to export the file as Lyx 1.6.x, it will be as unreadable as the 2.0 file.
