For anyone that may be interested in the future:
It seems that I have solved the problem, at least partially.
The LyX templates for svmono seem to be incomplete, but if I export
the Springer TeX templates directly into LyX, I find the error as I indicated
previously. The error is just one incorrect character instead of the 
apostrophe in the name O'Connell. After correcting the character
the whole stuff compiles OK.
