Hi Richard,
Thanks for your help, but I'm still not sure how to control the position of the line. I can make it appear below the heading but not in the right place. I also don't know how to make the line appear below the heading when the title is on more than one line. I'm using AMS article class. Then the solution depends a bit upon which document class you are using. The generic solution would be to use the titlesec package, which allows you to redefine how the chapter, etc, headings appear. There are all kinds of examples in the documentation's http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/titlesec/titlesec.pdf Appendix from which you can choose. If you're using memoir or one of the koma-script classes, they have their own ways to modify the appearance of such things. But the examples in the titlesec documentation will still be useful. The document class is article(AMS). I am using \renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0pt} in the preamble, because otherwise it puts a line on every page. Sorry, I still don't understand. You want a horizontal line underneath the chapter title? Or...? Richard PS Better to respond to the list, since then more people get a chance to answer.
