This is the normal way lists are styled in most document classes. If you want to change it, then you need to redefine the enumerate environment (in this case). Probably the easiest way to do this is to use the enumitem package, which has commands to do almost everything list related. That said, there is a good reason lists are styled that way: It's good typography.
