Ah yes that's probably the source.  I had forgotten the natbibapa.  Oh well 
it's not that hard to edit a bib file if needed.

My guess is that the difference comes from apa.cls loading
\usepackage{apacite}

while apa6.cls loads
\usepackage[natbibapa]{apacite}
