New installation - eye preview button greyed out

I recently install LyX on a new machine (MacOSX 10.8.4). I installed MacTeX and 
LyX. I am able to get the document to compile using the menu View > View (Other 
Formats) > pdflatex. However the eyes button on the toolbar is greyed out. Is 
this related to some type of preview plugin that I don't have? Do you have 
other suggestions for why this button might not be active?
