At least here on Linux, it's not that hard to put numbers on equations: Alt-m, n numbers (or unnumbers) the whole formula (every line if that's relevant), and Alt-m, N numbers (or unnumbers) an individual line.
Do you mean you'd like to be able to set a default so this happens automatically?
