We are doing the return trip for the Transpac. Honolulu to L.A. Over two weeks at sea on a Davidson 50. Sloop rigged, surfing hull. She hit about 19 knots for a short while on our last run two years ago. On the boat we have the ability to send and receive limited email, text only.
The main use of the Model T will just be to write, so a single purpose rom could work well. I was figuring I would end up with a NADSbox and use sd cards to do the transfers once a day. The laptop that is connected to the modem isn't mine, and I won't have access until I get to Honolulu. I'll work with laddiealpha here in a few days to see if that will work. I am definitely interested in the tsdos rom and 8k chip. What do I need to get you for that? I think Ken still has a few in stock but if not I can make some more. I would suggest that the most reliable way to transfer files to a PC is as follows- 1) get a TS-DOS ROM. Install in M100 2) get very comfortable with LaddieAlpha, as it is the "other end" that I think works best on PCs I think REX is overkill, and frankly I think that in an ocean crossing you might be better off with a straight ROM. It is more rugged than REX, as REX relies on spring loaded contacts and might not handle the rattle and bang of an offshore event. Regarding QUAD; I think that putting the additional 8K into the laptop is sufficient; QUAD does give you more RAM but it isn't contiguous RAM. If you want I can send you a TS-DOS ROM and an 8K RAM chip for a nominal amount + shipping. These are all my opinions. You mileage may vary. BTW, what kind of boat are you doing the crossing on? I have done a lot of sailing myself. Steve On Sat, May 23, 2015 at 3:52 PM, mechanicalgenius <[email protected]> wrote: I'm thinking about a REX and upgrading the ram my 24K M100. On club100 I see that Rex modules are "fresh stock in transit" and have been since I've been looking. Has the Pony Express made the delivery yet. I need a solid, easy to use way to transfer text files to a pc by my August sailing trip and REX seems like it. There will likely be several other users wanting to type out their experiences as well, so I hope to have it ready to go in July, in case I need to train the crew. I don't want to baby sit everytime someone wants to upload. Also, I want to increase the ram and QUAD looks like a good pairing. Is it available yet? How much? Should I get an 8K chip instead? Thanks! Robert
