The problem seems to be solved - I think maybe I was looking at more than one issue.
The battery connectors are a little loose, and I'm not sure there was a consistently good connection. So I used a little bit of paper wedged in to tighten the fit in the battery compartment. Also, I switched to a different 1 GB SD card. The combination of the two things seems to have solved the issue! Thanks, - Earl
