No, the best thing to do is to get rid of the old one before it leaks on the printed circuit board, and replace it with a new one (some soldering is involved).

The AA batteries will charge the NiCAD, as will the external charger. If the NiCAD isn't holding a charge anymore, it's time to replace it.
