No need to build a Pi3. You can do this now with mComm. The Windows version 
supports Telnet and SSH connections. The Android just Telnet (with and without 
SSL). So having a Windows machine or an Android phone is a requirement.

 

The problem is finding the Linux server. I used to use Retronet.net with mutt 
but they have shut down.

A Pi3 for email?

That reminds me of a project I wanted to do... try interacting with the list 
for a month with HTERM connected to a Pi running M100 termcap and Mutt.

It will be like a timewarp back to BBS / CompuServe email days.
