Actually, I think a lot of us started with BASIC as our first encounter with computers, programming and IT in general. Sadly, nowadays BASIC isn't very much appreciated any more, if it ever was.
A lot of people like the hands-on experience of programming a device to do their bidding. And some like the tinkering. That feeling has been lost in these times of GUI's. Hence the (unexpected) success of the Raspberry Pi, that started as a British experiment to bring kids/people back to electronices and programming. It was the start of a bunch of similar SBCs, compatible with the R.Pi or not. There is another, even more minimalistic project in the UK, micro:bit. Tethered to another PC, you program the device (calling it a computer is a stretch) to do all sorts of things with its LEDs, BT and buttons. There a several programming languages: Python, Javascript and 2 languages by MS. Not a bad way to start programming either.
