I have good experience using TE Connectivity AMP Connectors 1544210-2 (Digikey A117856CT-ND or Mouser 571-1544210-2) on RAM modules or other boards that are to be plugged into a socket. Use an old IC socket to align the strip and solder, then snip off the top part makes for a very neat final look. The pins are flat so they do not damage the socket.
I agree the round or square pins in my experience tend damage/deform sockets making them useless for other plug ins.
