I was able to get it working without much difficulty on a Model A Pi, with the knowledge that the LED hat mentioned doesn't quite mate on to the older Pi header, you'll have to jumper it in.
I've made some changes to the original code to add a "shell" prompt so you can use TERM to log into the Pi. That also makes the pi-tpdd useful for ftp/scp and ssh to another host.
