one thing to check. did you misalign the flex cable into the connector on the PCB or the monitor? sounds like you buzzed it out though.
pretty strange. all you did was change the nicad huh? hmm. Can you check the SRAM voltage? when laptop is OFF it should have ~3.2 V or so. When laptop is ON it should be +5V. SRAM is accessible from under the laptop. 8k SRAM chips so pin 28 = VCC and pin 14 = GND. Nothing in the option ROM socket? no RAM upgrades? trying to think what you can do to debug this...
