It can take a while, I'd let it sit with either good batteries or external
power 24 hours before expecting the internal battery to be charged enough
to hold data for any period of time. also you need the switch on the bottom
for memory power to be on.

If your internal battery hasn't been replaced in the last 30 years, replace
it.. it's bad.. trust us..  probably is leaking or about too
