I considered the same thing with an ESP-01 (
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195354250177 ).

The idea was to find a couple of resistors on the M100 motherboard
that could be lifted to isolate the actual modem from the uart in a
non destructive way, and then use one of those tiny level shifters for
the interface ( https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/174302572365 ).

The default firmware of the ESP-01 recognizes AT commands so it should
be easy to use it like a modem, and it is possible to set its baud
rate so it should work at 300 Bauds which IIRC is the M100's speed
when communicating with the modem.

I had the parts around for a couple of years now (ESP-01 were very
cheap back then) but before I attempt anything, I'd like to hear from
you guys with way more experience than me if it has a tiny chance of
working, or if I've totally overlooked something that would make this
hack impossible.

Cheers,
Eric
