One thing you might try is, there are several tpdd clients that run on
ms-dos.

tandy.wiki/TPDD_client

There are 4 possible tpdd clients there that run on dos, plus some gwbasic.

Since Backpack is a tpdd server, it should work with any of those, although
there are often compatibility issues between particular clients and
particular servers, since neither is ever perfect. So until someone just
tries it, any or none of those might work completely.

All of those clients presumably work with a real drive. Some are only for
tpdd1, some only for tpdd2, but for normal file access both tpdd1 and 2
have the same set of commands, so most tpdd1 clients actually still work on
tpdd2, and Backpack advertises itself as a tpdd2 emulator, so in both cases
there is reason to just try everything that says ms-dos or gwbasic
regardless of drive type and that's 5 chances there for a client that works.
