Hello! Recently I picked up a portable disk drive and I'm wondering if
someone might be confident in advising me on what to try next in
troubleshooting it.

When I put a disk in, it asks me if I want to format the disk and I say
yes. Then it spins up and seems to go through all the actions of
formatting. Watching it run with the case off, I can see the head progress
all the way across the disk. Right after the head appears to complete it's
journey, I get an error "Communication Error Press any key."

Finally, I must admit that the belt had turned to goo, and I decided to try
to save a few bucks and replaced it with a piece of wide, flat string. It
appears to spin up very quickly without slipping, but I'm still a little
suspicious of it and wonder if anyone else has had success or trouble with
replacing belts on the cheap? If it's just too much trouble to cheap out,
I'll just buy a proper belt.
