Might have saved you some time if I'd found them when you were having
trouble with the cable, but I was out of town; sorry.

Unfortunately, of course no matter what kind of drives you put in there
it'll still only have SDSS capacity; finding a way to access the second
side and maybe even going to 80 tracks would indeed be worth while. Then
again, maybe just building a modern version is more feasible.
