Full null "lap link" cables absolutely work.

You can do with less for tsdos. You need a 3 wire null plus signal ground
cable with one amendment that you need to defeat the cable check in tsdos
by looping back dsr to dtr. This can be done by jumpering it at the model t
end of the cable.  The "hot setup" on club100 describes a cable like this.

Some of my stuff: hterm and tback benefit from CTS/RTS flow control lines.
I generally just use some belkin serial laplink cables that I got a long
time ago.
