Perhaps a more useful question would be to replace the `outside the US' with `using a non-US keyboard (layout)'. For example, all my laptops I've ever bought here in Austria had a US keyboard, since programming becomes a pain otherwise due to the very uncomfortable key sequences to get characters like /|\, [], {} – or `'.
