Nice analysis!  And nice patch too.

Rene himself said that he thinks we abuse obstacks in the current implementation,
though I never took the time to figure out how to comb out the hair.

on head, I may experiment with adding an obstack_regrow macro that
I documented in the bug-m4 list.

That would be really interesting to see.  Especially if it finds its way
back to glibc eventually :-)
